Other Faiths
At Our Lady of Good Counsel, learning about other faiths and showing mutual respect is extremely important to us. We encourage our children to develop an understanding of different religions, cultures and traditions so that they grow into kind, respectful and compassionate individuals. Through our learning, discussions and shared experiences, we teach our children the importance of valuing and respecting everybody, just as Jesus taught us to do.
Lord Mayor of Leeds Visit
On Monday 18th May, we were extremely lucky to welcome the Lord Mayor of Leeds to our school. He visited us to share customs, beliefs and general knowledge about Judaism with the children.
We were very grateful for his time and for the opportunity to learn so many new facts and information. The children asked lots of thoughtful questions and showed fantastic respect throughout the visit.
Here are some of the sticky knowledge facts we learned:
⭐ Jewish New Year is celebrated in September and Jewish people eat apple dipped in honey to symbolise a sweet start to the year.
⭐ Men and boys may wear a kippah to remind them that God is always above them.
⭐ Hanukkah is a festival that is celebrated over 8 days.
⭐ A Jewish place of worship is called a Synagogue.
⭐ From Friday evening to Saturday evening is the Sabbath. During this special time, many Jewish families rest, pray and spend quality time together. Some Jewish people choose not to use technology or drive during this time.
All of the children were also extremely lucky to receive a special Lord Mayor badge, many of which are now being worn proudly on school jumpers.
Thank you again to the Lord Mayor for such a special and memorable visit.
