Maths

The children access a Maths lesson most days following the Government’s guidelines.

Maths is taught largely as a whole class, with a balance between teaching skills, problem solving and using and applying the skills in a variety of contexts. At times, some children may need group intervention or one to one support if they are not meeting the required expectation for their age or have gaps in their skills.

The teachers use a wide variety of materials to help deliver the Maths curriculum and lessons can have a practical, investigative or written focus.

The curriculum is significantly more demanding than it ever was and there is now a much greater focus on mental arithmetic and working with fractions.  For each year group there is a list of national expectations which need to be achieved for a child to be worked at the expected level for their age. A copy of the expectations can be found on the DfE website or in the parents guide to the curriculum (see below).
