Healthy Schools Awards Celebration

On Friday 1st July two of our Healthy Schools Ambassadors from year 5, accompanied Mrs Dickinson to the council chamber at Leeds Civic Hall. There were many schools from across Leeds in attendance for the city's 2nd Annual Healthy Schools Celebration Day.

It was a lovely day, they were greeted with a drink of juice and soon took there places in the council chamber where all the decisions about Leeds are made. Throughout the morning the children had the opportunity to vote on the cities priorities for health and wellbeing in schools for the coming year, as well as hear about all the good work that is going on in our schools already.

Councillor Mulherin and Councillor Dowson were in attendance and the children had the opportunity to speak with Cllr Dowson about there role as Healthy School Ambassadors.

It was a wonderful opportunity for the children and has motivated them to be even better in their roles next year.

The Leeds Healthy Schools Award

The Leeds Healthy Schools Programme (LHSP) passionately believes in continuing the legacy of improving Health and Wellbeing outcomes for pupils as they move into adulthood. Being healthy, being safe, being cared for, feeling listened to and being able to contribute are fundamental to being ‘ready to learn’ and achieving true potential at any stage in your lives. The aim of LHSP is to support schools to help their children and young people to grow healthily, safely and responsibly; to become active citizens who do their bit for society and for the environment. To hold the award Schools will be routinely assessed much the same as regular assessment by OFSTED.

In total there are approximately 43 criteria spit across 4 core areas, which assessors will look at.

The Four areas of Healthy Schools:

  • PSHE (13)
  • Healthy Eating (11)
  • Physical Activity (10)
  • Emotional Wellbeing Mental Health (EWMH) (9)

For each area there are a number of criteria to fulfil. For each criterion there are a number of grades to fulfil. Each grade will be scored in line with OFSTED grade descriptors: Outstanding/Good/ Requires Improvement/Inadequate. The numbers in brackets above are the number of Grades to fulfil for each area, within this are a number of criteria for each grade.

Here at Our Lady's we are working hard to achieve and maintain fulfilment of each criteria. Please take a look at some of our work which can be seen on our website and twitter account.
