The children are taught English skills every day following the Government’s guidelines.
Reading/Phonics: A core reading scheme is used in our school and is supplemented by a variety of good quality books to support work covered in English lessons. Reading is a major part of each English lesson. Parents are also a great help in this area of the curriculum. Children take books home to read on a regular basis. Children in Reception class to Year 2 also take part in a phonics lesson three times a week.
Writing: Children, from the earliest age, are encouraged to be as independent in their writing as possible. This continues to be an area of focus in school and is once again a key feature of many English lessons and across the curriculum.
Spelling: The basis of the school’s spelling policy is formulated from the recommendations in the National Literacy Strategy. Pupils are taught to spell in a structured way from Y1 and are encouraged to learn the spelling patterns and rules of formal grammar.
Speaking and Listening: The children are encouraged to speak clearly, articulately and politely at all times from the earliest age. They are also encouraged to listen attentively to each other and to all adults. Many Speaking and Listening activities are planned for during topic work including the use of role-play areas, drama and video and sound recorders.
